In a clear attempt to smooth over the growing rifts, Blair told the Financial Times the British government did not believe the constitution to be dead, despite the suggestions of some ministers. In an interview published Tuesday he said the constitution was "a perfectly sensible way forward" and that at some stage parts of it would have to be salvaged if Europe was going to function effectively.
