Interview with Jan Marinus Wiersma MEP, Vice-President Socialist Group EU Parliament, on further enlargement of EU
Question: Euro sceptics often take advantage of Turkey in order to transcend fear among the people on the eve of important decisions being taken by the EU, such as the Constitution. Are there any reasons to fear Turkey's accession to the European Union?
Answer: Negotiations with Turkey will take a long time, whereas after accession transitional arrangements, for instance regarding the free movement of labour, will be possible. I can understand fears people have, for instance for their jobs, but the answer lies in making our own economies more dynamic, not in shutting out beforehand a country whose economy is growing and very dynamic.
