Danish PM sows doubt on Turkey's EU membership

The European Union should continue to discuss whether Turkey should be granted full membership, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen told his followers on Saturday. National broadcaster DR said Rasmussen had hinted at his own doubts during a meeting with his Liberal Party, where members prepared for a meeting with other political parties this week on the country's European policy. 'We need to take the bull by the horns and discuss how big the EU can be,' the prime minister said. Rasmussen avoided giving away his own stance on Turkey's admission, but said it was hard to imagine EU borders reaching countries like Syria and Iraq. He added that Turkish culture would be difficult to adjust to the EU, but that because of its security policy, the union had an interest in allying itself with Turkey.
'It's a dilemma, but let's discuss it openly,' Rasmussen said. He said Ukraine was another country that could possibly become a cooperating partner without full membership. Recent polls have found that 58.2 percent of Danes are against Turkey becoming a member of the EU.
