EU allocates emergency aid for quake victims in Pakistan

The European Commission Sunday announced that it is sending an initial 3.6 million euro in emergency aid for the victims of the devastating quake in Pakistan. "Once again, a major earthquake has resulted in terrible suffering.
We have a duty to get help as quickly as possible to the people whose lives have been turned upside down,'' said Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. The funds will be used for emergency medical services and supplies, shelter for people who have lost their homes, food and drinking water, sanitation, and basic household items. Meanwhile, the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso sent a message of sympathy and solidarity to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. "It was with great distress and sadness that I learned about the tragic earthquake which shook northern regions of Pakistan on 8 October and resulted in very extensive loss of lives and
destruction,'' said Barroso.
