ALARM-BIRD FLU ARRIVES IN EUROPE: Turkey reports first bird flu cases

Turkey's agriculture minister has confirmed the country's first cases of bird flu. Officials have ordered all winged animals and street dogs in the village where it was detected destroyed as a precaution against the disease spreading. Military police have also set up roadblocks at the entrance to the village near Balikesir in western Turkey and are checking all vehicles entering and exiting, the Anatolia news agency said. The outbreak was confirmed by Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker, who said that Turkish officials had been communicating with officials in the European Union and other international organisations about the outbreak, Anatolia reported.
