Residents of Kalmykia ask EU countries, USA and Canada for political asylum

A group of residents of Kalmykia sent letters to embassies of the EU countries and the United States asking to grant them political asylum. A copy of the letter was sent to REGNUM. As the letter runs, in Kalmykia, all the agencies “with consent of Kalmykia Republic Head Kirsan Ilyumzhinov systematically violate civil rights and freedoms of Kalmykia residents. … Breaching the Constitution, Ilyumzhinov has been elected president of Kalmykia three times in 12 years.” On October 24, when a special session of the republic’s legislative assembly was scheduled to take place, activists opposing Ilyumzhinov held a session of the Kalmykia’s People Extraordinary Congress. At the meeting they adopted an appeal to members of the republican parliament calling them to vote against Ilyumzhinov. At the very that day officers of the republican Interior Ministry visited houses за the activists to draw up reports on violation of the Administrative Code. The letter includes a list of instruments of pressure on the opponents of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov “right up to physical extermination, as it was with journalist Larisa Yudina and farmer Baatr Bembeyev” (Yudina was killed in 1998. “Yabloko” party a member of which she was repeatedly pointed out connection of the assassination with the name of Ilyumzhinov. Bembeyev was killed at a protest meeting of the opposition against Ilyumzhinov in 2004 — REGNUM).
