Nigeria: No Development Without Security, Says Shroeder - by Moses Jolayemi

For peace, security and development to reign in the world, global leaders must work together using the tool of international co-operation to solve old conflicts and stand united to fend off new threats, says former German Chancellor, Gerhard Shroeder.

Speaking weekend at the 11th Annual THISDAY Awards in Lagos, Shroeder said the entire world is now faced with two challenges. The phenomenon of globalisation and establishing and maintaining peace and security in a world that has changed dramatically after the end of the cold war. According to him "without peace, there is no security. Without security there is no development. And without development there cannot be peace. "That is why we must all work together, to use the tool of international co-operation to solve these old conflicts and stand united to fend off new threats". In today's world, Shroeder told the highly elevated audience that there is no country that can master the new challenges alone. "I am saying this as a committed European. Because it is a lesson we have learnt on our continent", he said. Giving more insight into Europe's success story, Shroeder lectures: "The process of European integration, a common market and a joint currency helped us overcome nationalism. Europe as a community of peaceful states - that was our peoples' answer to centuries of war and destruction. "The addition of ten new member states from central and Eastern Europe has demonstrated how attractive this model continues to be. The European experience of co-operation and integration is an ideal formula for other regions around the world. But it very clearly illustrates the importance of regional co operation towards achieving peace and development. A development that can also be observed in Africa, Asia and the Gulf States."
