Svoboda says cartoons pretext, EU must close ranks

PRAGUE- The protests by radical Muslims against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in Danish papers are organised and Europeans should not give in to them, Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda writes in today's issue of daily Mlada fronta Dnes. Svoboda writes that papers must have the right to decide by themselves what they will publish and that "Europe must clearly say it will defend this right at any cost." "That is why I will press for the European Union to issue a clear signal abroad that it will not idly look on its embassies being burnt down and its nations being faced with threats," Svoboda writes. According to Svoboda "many people, who often do not know what actually happened, readily take part in a demonstration and loot. But only few Muslims feel a real hatred of the West." He says it is embarrassing that some governments, like the Syrian and Lebanese, have been unable to prevent the burning down of embassy buildings.

"How could it happen that the mob was allowed to enter the sovereign territory of a foreign state? This is unparalleled in the democratic world. A cannot imagine the embassy of an Arab country being burnt down in Europe," Svoboda writes.
