German Exports surge to new high

Exports, the mainstay of growth in Europe's largest economy, rose 7.5% to Eur 786bn ($941bn) in 2005, compared with Eur 732bn a year earlier, the Wiesbaden-based Federal Statistics Office said Wednesday.mAmong the beneficiaries of the growing trade were small- and mid-sized Mittelstand firms and global giants like Siemens, the engineering conglomerate. Demand for high-quality manufactured goods from the fast-growing economies of Asia and the Middle East drove the increase, officials said.

All told, though, the European Union remained the largest market for German-made goods, accounting for about 63% of total exports, according to the figures. The new figures suggest that Germany, which was already the world's leading exporter in 2003 and 2004, will retain that title once the World Trade Organization publishes its annual country export rankings later this year.
