New EU workers 'good for economy'

BRUSSELS — The European Commission urged EU member states on Wednesday to open up their labour markets to workers from Central Europe.

It said Britain, Ireland and Sweden had reported increased domestic growth without higher unemployment after letting in new workers from the states which joined the EU in May 2004. However, most of the older EU member states have restricted access to their labour markets and many are considering extending the timeframe of restrictions. The older EU states have until the end of April to decide whether to continue the restrictions for another three years.
