Dutch liberal party (Conservative) leader resigns over local vote

"AMSTERDAM - The leader of the Dutch liberal (Conservative) party, Jozias van Aartsen, resigned today due to a disappointing result for his party in yesterday’s local elections. Van Aartsen, leader of the VVD which has shared power nationally with the Christian Democrats (CDA) and centrist D66 party since 2003, said he would remain a member of parliament.

Dutch voters threw their support behind left-wing parties in the local elections and rejected anti-immigration populists and ruling centre-right parties blamed for an economic slump."
