EU won't shield producers from rivals

EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said Wednesday he cannot shield European producers from tough global rivals by using anti-dumping duties targeted at exporters who sell below cost.

"Don't look to me to enable you to compete better against the Chinese. Look to your own devices to do that unless there is clear evidence of dumping and it's in the community interest to use antidumping measures," he said.

The European Commission is investigating dozens of complaints from European firms about cheap or below cost Chinese goods -- from frozen strawberries to plastic bags -- that they claim unfairly undercuts them."Both our home market and our exports are under pressure from Asian producers but welcome to the global economy!" he told reporters. "I'm not going to misuse trade defense instruments to offer protection to European producers," he said. "They have to distinguish between what is tough competition and what is unfair trade."
