Spain opens door to workers from new EU member states

Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced yesterday that beginning on May 1, Spain will permit the free circulation of workers from the ten newest EU member states. So far, the EU-15, the member states before the most recent expansion, had not allowed workers from the new ten states to take up residence, with the exceptions of the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Sweden.

Zapatero announced this decision at the third Spanish-Polish summit meeting, held in Granada, after meeting with his counterpart,Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz. Zapatero said he was convinced that the decision to allow free circulation of workers from the new members will be very positive for their home countries, for the whole EU, and for the Spanish labor market. The ten new states are Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Malta.
