Trust in Greek politics being severely tested

As Greece marks 25 years since it joined the European Union, a poll made public yesterday indicates that the vast majority of its citizens think the country has benefited from membership but that trust in domestic politics has plummeted. The results of the Eurobarometer survey, conducted for the EU, warned Greek political parties that voters are losing faith in them. Seven in 10 of those questioned said that they did not trust the parties. The figure was much higher among young people - 83 percent in the 15-24 age group and 82 percent of those aged between 25 and 34. Just over half of all respondents said they did not trust the government. The institution which seems to have the most trust among Greeks is the army, with 78 percent, followed by radio. The Church and the EU tied in fourth place, gaining trust from 65 percent of those questioned. Greeks seem to feel good about their country's membership of the 25-nation bloc as 81 percent said Greece had benefited from being part of the Union, which it joined in 1981.
