Millions of Italians cast ballots on Sunday in a general election that may put Romano Prodi and the centre-left opposition in power and reshape the landscape of Italian politics.About 50.3m people were eligible to vote in the two-day election, which pits Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister, and his centre-right government against Mr Prodi and his allies. By midday on Sunday, 17.6 per cent of the electorate had voted.

The polling booths close at 3pm Italian time on Monday and the first exit polls will be released immediately afterwards.
