Romania: needs political stability, says Rehn

The European commissioner for enlargement, Olli Rehn, says reforms, which have been applied in Romania, should also show results. "Romania made significant progress in the last year especially as regards the reform of the judicial system and the establishment of the infrastructure for the combat of corruption and organized crime," Rehn told a press conference organized at the Intercontinental Hotel. The European official specified that in the report to be issued on May 16, the Commission "will fully acknowledge" the sectors where considerable progress was made, but that it will also highlight the areas where further efforts are needed.

Based on the assessment of the European Commission, the European Council will reach a "carefully calibrated" decision referring to the accession date, seeking to make sure that reform will also continue after Romania joins the EU, said Rehn. He also warns that now, a few weeks before the preliminary report CE will send to the European Parliament on Romania’s accession to EU, Bucharest should prove the political environment is a stable one.
