Robot vehicles compete in first European trial at German army base

Hammelburg, Germany - Robot vehicles that can drive on and off roads without any human on board were being readied Tuesday for Europe's first competitive trials at a German army base.

Army reformers say self-drive vehicles may not only be useful carrying supplies to soldiers on battlefields, but also as fighting machines for counter-terrorism operations. Germany and other nations already use all-terrain robots to help defuse unexploded bombs. This week's European Land Robot Trial (ELROB), the first such event in Europe, is being held at Hammelburg, 85 kilometres east of Frankfurt. Lieutenant Colonel Juergen Ammann said the three-day meet was intended to establish what progress European inventors had made.
