Dutch Most Critical Of EU After Swedes but favor expansion of EU

The Dutch are much more critical of the European Union than other Europeans. "Mainly because the Dutch Government does a poor job in communicating the benefits of the EU and in promoting the need for European unity at all levels, notes a Dutch European Parliamentarian. Only the Swedes are more negative, a survey commissioned by the European Commission reveals. Of all 25 EU countries, the Dutch are most ignorant about European Parliament elections. Nearly half said 'no' to the question: "Is the European Parliament directly elected by citizens of the EU?". Another 10 percent said they did not know. "Very disappointing," sighed Sjerp van der Vaart, director of the European Parliament office in The Hague. He believes too little attention is given to the EU at Dutch schools. "I am calling on Education Minister Maria van der Hoeven to bring the European dimension to the attention of schoolchildren."
