"01/06/2006: EPP-ED Study Day: Reunification of European History. Aldis Kušķis MEP, Tunne Kelam MEP and Vytautas Landsbergis MEP

With the aim of creating a common European awareness about the crimes committed by Communist regimes behind the Iron Curtain in Central and Eastern Europe, the Members of the European Parliament from the three Baltic States - Aldis Kušķis (Latvia), Tunne Kelam (Estonia) and Vytautas Landsbergis (Lithuania) - are organising the EPP-ED Study Day "Reunification of European History" which will take place on the 8th of June 2006 at the EP building in Brussels, PHS3C050. Outstanding European politicians and experts have agreed to share their knowledge of political, historical and legal aspects of Nazi and Soviet totalitarianism.

In 2004, Europeans celebrated the political reunification of Europe. However, the mental barrier which was created between Western and Eastern Europe as the result of 50 years of totalitarian domination must still be overcome.

"We have to understand that we also need a 'reunification' of our common history. The legacy of totalitarianism in Europe is one of the core topics we have to address. For several generations now, people have been studying the crimes of Nazism. Europeans must gain a similar understanding of the criminal nature of the totalitarian communist regime", Aldis Kušķis commented."
