A major antigovernmental demonstration is to be held in Spain today to protest government talks with Basque Separatists

A major antigovernmental demonstration is to be held in Spain later today to protest against the Socialist government's plans to start peace talks with the Basque separatist group ETA. The project was developed following the guerilla organisation's announcement of a permanent ceasefire in March. The demonstration is being organised by the AVT association for the victims of terrorism, which has strong links with the conservative Popular Party led by Mariano Rajoy. Earlier this week Rajoy's opposition party withdrew its support for the government's plans for peace talks with the Basque guerilla organisation. The move was made in protest against a planned meeting between Socialist officials and Batasuna, a Basque separatist party banned for its links with ETA.
