Salmon farming merger move referred to regulator - by Andrew Bolger
A proposed merger that would lead to the creation of the world's biggest Atlantic salmon farming company has been referred to the Competition Commission by the Office of Fair Trading over fears that it would lead to higher prices for consumers. The proposed €1.3bn acquisition by Norway's Pan Fish of Marine Harvest, Scotland's largest salmon farming company, would control about 50 per cent of Scotland's farmed salmon output, and 20 per cent of global production.
In the EU, total consumption of seafood is about 16m tones annually, of which farmed salmon is only about 700,000 tonnes - less than 5 per cent.
