Italy were crowned world champions for a fourth time after Fabio Grosso held his nerve to score the decisive penalty to defeat France 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. The Azzurri scored all five of their kicks as a miss from David Trezeguet proved France's undoing after the Berlin final finished 1-1. Marco Materazzi had earlier cancelled out a penalty from Zinedine Zidane, whose last professional match finished in heartbreak and ignominy following a red-card in extra-time.
