EU chief warns Brown to accept the 'club rules'- by Toby Helm

Gordon Brown will have to accept the "club rules" if and when he is elevated to the European Union's top table, the president of the European Commission says today. Jose Manuel Barroso, who is close to Tony Blair, fires a warning shot at the Chancellor, saying that he must learn to behave like a team player if he is to have influence in Brussels as the next prime minister.

In an interview with The Spectator, the Portuguese president of the commission says that while he appreciates Mr Brown will have to stand up for British interests he will also have to learn that he will do this through backing the common European interest. Referring to Mr Brown's future role in EU meetings, Mr Barroso says: "If I may use the phrase, this is a club - and Britain has a great tradition of clubs. And you cannot go to a beef-eaters club and say you are a vegetarian. You have no influence."
