The European Parliament has passed a resolution demanding that the European Commission and European Central Bank reveal whether they were aware of a secret U.S. government program to obtain private international banking records.
The resolution adopted yesterday says the parliament "demands that the European Commission, the council and the European Central Bank explain fully the extent to which they were aware of the secret agreement between SWIFT and the U.S. government."
SWIFT is an international co-operative, owned by banks and other financial institutions. It owns an electronic messaging system that more than 7,800 financial institutions in more than 200 countries — including Canada — use to communicate with one another to carry out financial transactions like money transfers.
