US, France agree on UN Lebanon text cease fire

The United States and France, after days of talks, have reached a deal on a Lebanon resolution for consideration by the United Nations Security Council, French and US diplomats confirmed Saturday. A French diplomat in New York said the resolution would call for a "cessation of all hostilities" by Israel and the radical Lebanese Shiite group, Hezbollah.

UN sources said France had been persuaded by the US to abandon its insistence on an "immediate" suspension of hostilities. France had also made a further concession to the Americans in agreeing to emphasize Israel's right to defend itself against any Hezbollah attack. Drafts of the resolution were not made immediately available but were being circulated among the other 13 council members. A closed-door meeting of the council was scheduled for 1900 GMT in New York, but it was unlikely any vote would be taken Saturday as the other council members would have to confer with their governments, informed sources said.
