Apple and Coca-Cola join forces in Europe for online music

Apple and Coca-Cola join forces in Europe for online music Coca-Cola and Apple are joining forces to launch a major online music advertising campaign in Europe. In Great Britain, Coke and Apple are giving away 70 million songs from Apple's iTunes Music Store, Chris Burggraeve, who heads marketing in Europe for Coca-Cola, told dpa. In Germany, the two partners plan to give away one iPod with 50 songs on it every hour for eight weeks. The campaign will be launched in Great Britain in mid August and last for six weeks. In Europe, Apple's iTunes head Eddy Cue has stated that "more than 200 million songs" have been sold in the past two years – 50 million in the first, 150 million in the second. The European iTunes catalog currently contains around three million songs, with more than 1,000 independent labels represented in addition to the majors. The iTunes Music Store is now open in 17 countries in Europe. Apple is replacing Coca-Cola's previous partners from the Microsoft camp: T-Online's Musicload in Germany and OD2 in Great Britain. The joint venture also includes a link to the iTunes Store from a new Coke music site; starting on August 9, a Coke Music Store based on iTunes will be in operation at that address. Coca-Cola also plans to offer recordings from sponsored live concerts in Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland via iTunes at that web site. "This year, Coca-Cola is celebrating its 120th anniversary, and during this long time music has played a crucial role for us again and again," Burggraeve explained his company's commitment.
