ABB wins contracts worth $33 million to supply Dutch wind project
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said it has won contracts worth a total of $33 million to provide power equipment and cable connections for the Dutch offshore wind farm, Q7.
Q7 will be the largest wind farm in the Dutch North Sea when it commences operation in 2007, about 30 kilometers from Amsterdam. Each turbine will generate about two MW (megawatts) of power, totaling about 435 gigawatt/hours per year - enough to power roughly 140,000 homes, and reduce CO2 emissions by 255,000 tons annually. The contract includes a study to help ensure the project complies with Dutch grid codes. The Dutch government is aiming for offshore wind power production of 6,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020.
Europe's installed wind power capacity of 40,500 MW is 69 percent of world's total generated wind power. Wind power capacity in Europe grew by 18 percent in 2005, and provides nearly 3 percent of the EU's electricity consumption in an average wind year. New installed capacity in Europe during 2005 was led by Germany (1,808 MW), Spain (1,764 MW) and Portugal (500 MW). Wind energy is expected to supply more than one fifth of Europe's power needs by 2030.
