Airbus Replaces Chief Of A380 Super Jumbo Program - by Shaveta Bansal

Toulouse, France (AHN) - Airbus on Monday removed Charles Champion as head of the delayed A380 superjumbo program. Champion's ouster comes on the day that Airbus for the first time is running a test of its A380 with 474 volunteer Airbus staff members on board. The plane maker said Mario Heinen, 50, will take over the A380 series after previously overseeing its single-aisle range of A320-family jets. The appointment is CEO Christian Streiff's first since he took over in July, replacing Gustav Humbert. Heinen's key task will be to ensure that there is no further slippage in deliveries since the double-decker jets are already a year behind the schedule and any further delays may cut the operating profits for the French aircraft maker. Alain Flourens, 49, will replace Heinen as head of the Airbus single-aisle program.

The first delivery of the plane is scheduled for Singapore Airlines Ltd. at the end of December.Airbus committed to building the A380 in December 2000 and so far has won orders for 159 planes from 16 customers. One of four A380 test planes left Toulouse on Monday with 474 passengers on board. The passenger list was formed of the Airbus staff in France, Germany, Spain and Britain, who competed through lots for a place on the jet.
