EU Trade Boss Goes to Brazil, Washington - by CONSTANT BRAND
STRASBOURG, France — European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said Tuesday he will launch new consultations with world trade partners in the coming weeks to revive talks that collapsed in July. Mandelson travels to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later this week to meet representatives of the G-20 nations _ a group of developing countries led by India and Brazil _ and then to Washington to meet later in the month with members of U.S. Congress.
Mandelson reiterated EU demands calling for Washington to cut its farm subsidies, arguing that it would cut similar aid in turn. "Without a change in this position, advanced developing countries like Brazil and India will not be ready to offer greater access to their markets for industrial goods and services and that is the crux of the eventual deal we are seeking," Mandelson said.
