Merkel backs workers in board decisions - by Hugh Williamson
Angela Merkel on Wednesday offered surprisingly forthright backing for co-determination, Germany's system of involving workers in corporate decision-making but she urged trade union leaders to be more flexible in accepting reform.
The German chancellor described co-determination as "an essential part of Germany's social market economy", in a speech at a labour congress in Berlin. She distanced herself from business lobbyists and conservative politicians who want to rein in significantly the influence employees have on company supervisory boards.
