Slovenia's Biggest Solar Power Plant Opens in Mavcice

Savske elektrarne Ljubljana, which manages four hydro plants on the river Sava, has adopted a plan to produce electricity from renewable energy sources and thus contribute its share to the protection of the environment, the director of the company Drago Polak told STA. The construction of the solar plant started in April 2006 and the plant has been producing energy since the beginning of July. Savske elektrarne financed the SIT 48m (EUR 200,300) project from their own funds. In the following years the company is planning to construct solar power plant also by the hydro plants Vrhovo and Medvode. Savske elektrarne also intends to expand the 35.7 kW solar plant Mavcice, which is already the biggest one in Slovenia and produces 20% of solar electricity in Slovenia.

More solar plants would be built in Slovenia if the state subsidies for the generated power were on the EU level, the head of the project, Roman Modic told STA.
