Skilled Chinese urged to work in Scotland - by Kathleen Nutt

MINISTERS plan to attract up to 12,000 Chinese workers to Scotland over the next four years. A Scottish executive official at the British embassy in Beijing will encourage skilled workers to come to Scotland to work in electronics, IT and financial services. The move, part of the Scottish executive’s plan to strengthen links with China, follows a visit to Beijing last month by finance minister Tom McCabe.

The planned influx would be the biggest since 32,000 eastern Europeans came to Scotland following EU enlargement. Most of the immigrants from countries such as Latvia, Poland and the Czech Republic have been lured by higher salaries and have found work in fish-processing factories in the Highlands and southwest Scotland and also in the hospitality and catering industries. But concerns have been raised over whether public services will be able to cope with the influx of Chinese workers.
