Anders Fogh Rasmussen the no-nonsense Dane

Mr Rasmussen is a rare type of Scandinavian politician. In a region where social democratic parties usually dominate the political scene, the Danish Prime Minister's centre-right coalition not only pulled off a surprise election victory in 2001 but was easily re-elected in 2005 and continues to do well in the opinion polls.

Rasmussen says: "I think our government established a closer link between the people and politicians. In the 1990s, people felt insecure because of too much immigration, too many problems with integration and unemployment among immigrants. At the same time taxes were rising. Before the 2001 election we promised to strengthen immigration laws and introduce a tax freeze. We have kept our promises and at the same time have maintained the basic elements in the Danish welfare system. "We also reformed the welfare system and have now agreed to raise the retirement age in Denmark. My formula is change which will go hand in hand with security."
