Italy leader faces opposition on budget.

Coming off diplomatic successes this summer over his role in Lebanon peace efforts, Prime Minister Romano Prodi has awakened to a harsh reality back home. The prime minister‘s troubles are likely to persist as he seeks to win parliamentary approval for the budget and fights to carry out an ambitious plan to merge his center-left coalition‘s largest parties. Walston said the most serious risk to the government‘s stability comes from the budget, which includes $42 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes and must be approved by Parliament by the end of the year. The proposed budget was met with mounting challenge Sunday, as the opposition vowed to organize protests throughout the country. Prodi acknowledged that changes were possible, as long as the country‘s public finances weren‘t put at risk.
