EU referendum on constitution

European Green parties have adopted a common platform advocating a single pan-EU referendum on a constitution once the approach to building the 25-nation bloc is revised, party leaders said at the end of their congress yesterday. The Green Parties from 31 countries also adopted a new manifesto and charter that tackled economic policy for the first time, they added.
“This is a first step for the European elections in 2009,” said Ulrika Lunacek, an Austrian parliamentarian and co-president of the European Green Party.
Some 90% of the 229 delegates adopted the new manifesto, ‘A Green Future for Europe’, said the other co-president, Philippe Lambert of Belgium.
Although most Green Party leaders had supported the planned constitution for the EU last year, Lambert underlined that the party’s membership had been far more divided on the issue.
