Airbus confronts problems from top down - by Mark Landler and Nicola Clark

Clamping together an airplane, engineers readily acknowledge, is a fairly simple job, requiring rivet guns and some elbow grease. Clamping together an airplane company is more complicated. Airbus, the European plane maker, has managed to stumble at both tasks over the past year - creating an airplane, the A380, that cannot go into service on schedule for want of proper electrical wiring, made by a company that could not solve this problem for want of competent management.

Now, with Airbus in the deepest crisis of its 36-year history, its corporate parent, European Aerospace Defense & Space, or EADS, is addressing the second problem in order to fix the first.
