Critics slam Harper's EU summit cancellation

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's cancellation of meetings with European leaders prompted critics to level blistering accusations that he's avoiding criticism over his environmental policies. Harper was supposed to take part in a Canada-European Union summit in Finland at the end of November, but cancelled on Saturday, citing the need to stay close to home because of his government's fragile minority status.

But the prime minister's office announced Harper still plans to attend end-of-the-month trade talks in Hanoi, and NATO meetings in Latvia just two days after the scheduled Canada-EU summit. Critics at home speculated that Harper didn't want to show up in Finland empty handed after European officials announced that the Kyoto Protocol accord would be on the agenda at the meetings.
