Bulgaria's PM: "Freezing EU Talks with Turkey Is Fair"

The EU Foreign Ministers' decision to freeze the accession talks with Turkey is fair and objective, Bulgaria's PM Sergey Stanishev told Darik News. The process is not stopped but a clear indication is given that if Turkey wants to be a full-fledged member of the EU it has to comply with the commitments it has undertaken, he said. Bulgaria is interested in the European prospects and the democratic development of all its neighbours, he added.

When asked about the demand of Finnish MEP Ari Vatanen that the EC stand for decommissioning Kozloduy nuke units 3 and 4 at the end of this year is reconsidered, Stanishev said Bulgaria has signed an agreement with the EU and it has to comply with it. Editorial note EU-Digest: The PM of Bulgaria should be one of the last people to make any comments about "Turkey meeting its EU requirements" if we take a serious look at the extreme leniency Bulgaria was given by the EU Commission in meeting their own requirements to enter "the EU Club". Bulgaria has 7,385,367 inhabitants (July 2006 est.) and Turkey 70,413,958 (July 2006 est.) Let us keep those figures in perspective Mr. Sergei STANISHEV
