"Stop crying doom at EU’s expansion

When European Union heads meet in Brussels next week, they will again face a tough question: is the Union ready to take on new member states? This question pops up every time the club is about to enlarge. This time they will discuss strategy after Bulgaria and Romania join in January, taking membership to 27 countries. Future potential members include Turkey and states in former Yugoslavia.
Over the past 50 years the Union has increased its membership five times. The first four enlargements were relatively easy. They did not, however, go without opposition."
