Zimbabwe: EU Acts On Diamonds - by Njabulo Ncube, Clemence Manyukwe
THE European Union (EU), which chairs the Kimberley Process of certifying legitimate diamonds, has summoned executives from River Ranch Limited to a meeting in Harare today to respond to allegations of diamond smuggling. The EU move comes days after a team of officials from government, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) and the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) visited the Beitbridge mine to begin their own investigations into the smuggling claims, denied categorically by a spokesman for River Ranch Limited this week. Solomon Mujuru partly owns River Ranch Limited, and sits on the company's board together with another senior ZANU PF figure, Tirivanhu Mudariki.
Sources said River Ranch executives are to meet EU ambassador Xavier Marshal today over the matter, which has attracted global attention.
