EU climate agreement 'makes sense' to Danish Environment Minister Connie Hedegaard

The European Commission released its new integrated energy and climate change package Wednesday, foreseeing nothing short of a global catastrophe if the world's current pollution and energy usage trends are not reformed. The environment minister, Connie Hedegaard, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and said that implementation of the commission's plans to cut greenhouse gases by 20 percent is of the utmost urgency. 'We can't wait 100 years. We have the technology today. Now it's about political will,' said Hedegaard.

The EU commission' plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions in Europe by 20 percent before 2020 and by 30 percent for the world's 'worst offenders' - the US, India, China and Brazil. The EU commission's plan also seeks to steer countries into using renewable energy sources, such as water, wind and solar energy.
