French strawberry growers are looking for Polish fruit pickers

Warsaw - Polish strawberry growers are afraid of labor shortages during the coming season. A group of strawberry growers from France visited Poland last week. Producers from both countries discussed differences and problems of the strawberry sector in France and Poland. First of all – because of climatic differences – the picking season in France starts in the middle of April and lasts until the middle of November. The Polish season is much shorter – usually it lasts from the end of May until mid July.

All French plantations are irrigated, in Poland – only the largest growers can afford irrigation. The main difference is the price of the fruit. Last year, French growers received about 3 € per 1 kg of strawberries, Polish producers - about 1 €/kg. In France most of strawberries are grown for the fresh fruit market. In Poland – 70% is grown for the processing industry. Most of Polish growers work independently, which was pretty difficult to understand for their French colleagues as 60% of French strawberry growers are organized in cooperatives.
