Czechs seize 19 tonnes of contaminated Turkish figs

Prague customs officers have seized more than 19 tonnes of figs from Turkey in which tests confirmed excessive levels of carcinogenic aflatoxins, customs spokesman Zdenek Malek told CTK today. He said an analysis found eight times more aflatoxins in the figs than permitted levels.

The shipment receiver will have to export the contaminated figs outside the territory of the European Union, or destroy them under customs officers´ supervision. About the same amount of figs, also from Turkey, were seized in early November. Malek said that customs officers regularly uncover similar cases before Christmas. Last year they intercepted tonnes of contaminated foods, he said.
