Nearly All Immigrants Pass Mandatory Dutch Language Test in Holland

THE HAGUE, 19/01/07 - The language and culture tests that immigrants are required to do in their country of origin in order to be able to come to the Netherlands appear to be no great obstacle for them. About 90 percent of participants pass the test, according to figures sent by Integration Minister Rita Verdonk to parliament. Most candidates are aged between 26 and 35, followed by the 26-25 age group. They are predominantly of Turkish (20 percent), Moroccan (19 percent) and Chinese (10 percent) nationality.

The exam was introduced on 15 March 2006 for residents of most non-EU countries. Up to 30 September, 1,436 people took the exam. Of these, 46 percent were women, among whom 88 percent passed in one go, compared with 90 percent among men. Most participants have an average educational level.
