Netherlands Lags Way Behind In R&D Spending

The Netherlands lags way behind other rich countries in research and development (R&D) spending, figures from statistical bureau Eurostat revealed Friday. In 2004, the Netherlands spent 1.78 percent of Gross Domestic Product on R&D, not even equalling the average of all the then 25 member states (1.85 percent). Countries like Finland (3.46 percent), Austria, Germany, France and Denmark all spent far more on R&D. Japan (3.18 percent) and the US (2.68) also scored much better than the Netherlands. The EU countries earlier agreed to achieve an average of 3 percent by 2010. The aim is also that companies then put 67 percent in innovation. In the Netherlands, this figure is now 51 percent, while the EU average is nearly 55 percent.
