Hastings named chairman of U.S.-Europe commission - by Larry Lipman

WASHINGTON — Repr. Alcee Hastings has been appointed chairman of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. The commission, commonly known as the Helsinki Commission in reference to the 1976 agreement that created the 55-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, consists of nine members each from the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate plus one member each from the departments of State, Defense and Commerce.

The commission participates in the organization's deliberations and efforts to promote human rights and enhance the security of Europe and North America. Hastings' appointment was made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who bypassed him for the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee last month. Hastings had been accused of participating in a bribery conspiracy, but was acquitted of the charges in federal court.
