Building a 'bridge to Europe' over the Danube - by Thys Papôt

The River Danube wends its way between Romania and Bulgaria, the two countries which become the newest members of the European Union on 1 January 2007. The waters of the river form a barrier between the two nations which extends for many kilometres without as much as a glimpse of a bridge to connect them. This is one reason why Romania and Bulgaria have little contact with one another. The EU hopes that the construction of a new bridge over the Danube will encourage a feeling of 'togetherness' between the two neighbours.

Due to the involvement of the European Union - and the financial supports it's giving (around 70 million euros) - there now appears to be some progress on building the bridge. Vladimir Bereanu says the construction plans are mainly the result of a political compromise. The European Commission has required that Bulgaria close four of the reactors at its nuclear power plant in Kozlodoej because they didn't meet European safety standards.
