CARICOM calls on EU to release pledged funds to sugar producers
Caribbean sugar industry officials say the EU was due to make its first pay out of 40 million Euros in sugar aid to African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries by the end of last year. The EU has now said the money should reach the countries by the middle of this year.
This has upset many producers and led to criticism of the European Commission, which is in charge of making the payments. Guyana's Foreign Trade Minister, Henry Jeffrey, says the continued delays could affect important projects in the Caribbean which aim to modernise and help diversify the sugar industry.
