PARIS – Is it a political sin to be rich? French voters are asking that question this week amid an uproar over wealth taxes paid by top presidential candidates, especially Socialist Segolene Royal.
Her party's chief, whom Royal has lived with for three decades, said last year, “I don't like the rich” – a statement reflecting an unusual unease with wealth and profit-making for a nation that the IMF ranks as the world's sixth-richest.
