Helping newcomers navigate the real estate maze of Istanbul - by Susanne Fowler

STANBUL: This sprawling city on the Bosporus has for centuries fascinated Westerners, drawn by its Oriental mystique. Today's visitors are mainly tourists just passing through, but some are sufficiently smitten to want to stay on in this trying but trendy metropolis on the cusp of Europe and Asia. These new residents need a place to stay. Many are attracted by the architecture and vibrant café lifestyles of Istanbul's old European areas, and seek apartments in exotic-sounding neighborhoods like Cihangir, Galata and Tophane.

But in a city beset by illegal construction and often untraceable ownership documents, navigating this maze can require help.
